“Messages of Light” Conveying Gratitude in the Night Sky of Nagaoka
On August 2 (Sat.) and 3 (Sun.), 2025, a drone show was staged as the finale performance of the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture.
As the fireworks reached their climax, 500 drones ascended into the night sky to display luminous messages of gratitude. These messages embodied a spirit of mutual appreciation— from the organizers to the spectators, and from the spectators back to the organizers and pyrotechnicians.
Phrases such as:
- “Aiming to be the world’s most well-mannered fireworks festival”
- “Please keep moving forward without stopping”
- “See you again next year”
were written across the sky, gently guiding the audience as they departed. As a result, spectators were able to savor the afterglow of the fireworks while receiving the messages, leaving the venue smoothly and safely without diminishing the dignity of the Nagaoka Fireworks.
This initiative demonstrated a new approach to event management that successfully balanced two elements often considered at odds—“safety guidance” and “emotional resonance.” It also reaffirmed the potential of drones to contribute to both artistic performance and safety management at large-scale public events.
